Setting up a Peer Mentor Program

Step #1

Talk to your school administration, counselors, and special education administration and get them to understand and support the peer mentor program,

Step #3

Start small, try and get one peer mentor for a few periods a day.  Schedule them carefully with easy to work with students and curriculum that is clear and consistent.  Train them well.  Have them do the same thing each day. Make sure their personality is a match for the student.

Step #2

Train your para educators on the expectations of peer mentors and have a clear schedule of exactly who is doing what in the classroom at all times.  Schedule who is to oversee, and train the peer mentor and decide what that will look like.

Step #4

Talk with your team, what is working, what needs to change.  Start recruiting more Peer Mentors and adding them in slowly.
